It was a beautiful day at the field. This is a little video of the Atoms Field and Rick Briggs' 2m flying wing in flight.

I am heading out the field to fly from 12:30 pm until my batteries are dead. Could be shorter if there is nobody to spot me and I cannot fly FPV.

  • adamcbeder replied to the topic 'FAA Final ruling. What are your thoughts?' in the forum.
I did read it. I am not happy about it. It seems clear that the FAA a) does not understand our hobby, b) does not care that Congress has strictly prohibited the FAA from issuing this kind of a rule c) has a specific issue with FPV, even when it is performed safely under the AMA's guidelines for FPV.

I am perhaps more concerned that the FAA seems to have redefined commercial use of model aircraft to prohibit any flight of model aircraft for profit. As I read it, it will prohibit test flying model airplanes and demo flights by manufactures/retailers. If enforced by the FAA, it would kill all domestic R&D of model aircraft that is too big to be flown indoors.

I have heard that the AMA has advised members to continue "business as usual" for the time being, and that FPV is still permitted under the AMA guidelines. They were supposed to meet with the FAA yesterday and expected to have some communication out to members by next week with an update.

It is a shame that a handful of morons doing stupid things with model aircraft and have posted their antics on YouTube are risking this hobby that we all love. Whether you enjoy FPV or not, this rule could have a lasting impact on all areas of our hobby. I do hope that you all all read the AMA's statement here www.modelaircraft.org/files/AcademyofMod...AAinterpretation.pdf and take the opportunity to comment on the FAA's interpretive rule to tell them how you enjoy this hobby safely and ask that they do not regulate our hobby into oblivion because a few idiots did idiotic things with their quadcopters.
